On the morning of June 12, at the community counseling center of Tongji Medical College, a spirited elderly man arrived and made phone calls with several patients to confirm the specific time for their consultations the next day. He is Professor Tian Shutong, a retired English professor from Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. At the age of 79, Professor Tianmade a “transition” to study counselingpsychologyand set up studios in universities and communities to provide free counseling, which he has been doing for 20 years. On June 13, Professor Tian celebratedhis 100th birthday, and even on that day, he still hadwork arrangements. He said, “I want to make the most of my remaining years as long as I am capable”.

On June 13th, Professor Tian celebrated his 100th birthday. On the afternoon of June 11th, his students, including Professor Zhou Aifen, director of Wuhan Childrens Hospital, sent their birthday wishes in advance to the professor.
On the afternoon of June 12th, a reporter from JIMU News visited Professor Tians counseling center, which is located in a single-story house in the community of Tongji Medical College. A sign with a reservation phone number hung outside the door. Upon meeting Professor Tian, he had a warm and welcoming smile. Although the next day would be his 100th birthday, apart from a simple meal with his family, he dedicated most of his time to a few patients who had made appointments.
“I have been teaching English at the university, and after retiring, I started studying psychology out of interest,” said Professor Tian with a smile. “Its quite interesting,” he added. After graduating from university in 1952, Professor Tian worked as an English teacher at Tongji Medical College until his retirement. In 2002, at the age of 79, he devoted himself to the field of psychology.
At that time, some of his classmates and even teacherswere studentsthat Professor Tianhad earlier taught. In 2003, he graduated with excellent results and obtained a certificate as a senior counseling psychologist.
Since then, Professor Tian, in his eighties, embarked on a new career in counselingpsychology. He successively opened studios at Tongji Medical College, Wuhan Childrens Hospital, and Tongji Medical College Community, providing free counseling. In the blink of an eye, it has since been twenty years.

His unique ways of resolvingpsychological problems
Professor Tian has his own set of insights into providing counseling: usefewer psychology theories and focus more on building trust and helping patients resolve their inner conflicts.
On that day, the JIMU News reporter noticed a neatly arranged collection of psychology books on a large bookshelf in the counseling room, with the majority of them being English editions. “These are my cherished treasures. They contain the cutting-edge international theories and practices in psychology, which provide me with the confidence to engage in counseling,” Professor Tian explained to the reporter, adding that reading books is one of his favorite pastimes whenever he has free time.
Interestingly, Professor Tians English skills also come in handy during his counseling sessions, helping adolescents overcome challenges with their mental health. Some of the children even excelled academically as a result of his counseling.
Several years ago, a boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was brought to Professor Tian for counseling. He was mischievous and had a strong aversion to studying at school. Instead of lecturing him, Professor Tian engaged the boy in English listening and speaking exercises. With his English improving greatly, the boy became more confident and gradually recovered from his depression. Today, the boy, now a straight-A student, is studying at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.

Professor Tian said that he starts work at the counseling office every day at 8 oclock and has no fixed time for getting off work when he is busy. A student who came to visit him expressed concern and said, “Youre already a hundred years old, why do you still work so hard?”
“When Im working, I feel joyful, and thats my secret to longevity. I will dedicate the rest of my life to working,” said Professor Tian with a smile. He expressed that this sense of achievement brought him great satisfaction.
To facilitate his daily commute to the counseling room, Professor Tian gave up a better living environment and chose to live on the old campus. Due to his advanced age, Professor Tians eyesight has deteriorated, and he relies on a magnifying glass as “glasses” when searching for materials. During counseling sessions, which require talking and consoling patients, his throat becomes hoarse after a few hours, so he always keeps a box of throat lozenges on his desk throughout the year.
Professor Tian is optimistic about these unseen “sacrifices”. His message to the younger generation is, “Compared to the sense of accomplishment that comes from working diligently, all the difficulties one faces are nothing. No Sacrifice, No Success.”
On June 12th, Professor Tians student, Zhou Aifen, the director of Wuhan Childrens Hospital, mentioned in an interview, “Professor Tians eagerness for learning and dedication to working set an example for younger generations. Through his continuous pursuit, he has realized his self-worth.”
